PUBLIC INFORMATION (PIO) PROCESS FOR POLICE OFFICERS

Municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies in New Jersey are obligated to release appropriate information to news organizations in a timely manner. This course is designed for the police executive, public information officer (PIO) and the shift commander. The course will provide specific information on the responsibility of law enforcement with regard to media inquiries on the activities of the police agency.

Some of the topics covered include: Executive Order Number 69; "Common Law" Right to Know; Police Reports-Public Records or Confidential; Court Rules and State Statutes; how to prepare a news release; setting up news conferences; developing public information policy and procedures and dealing with the media during a crisis or crime scene situation.
