FIREARMS INSTRUCTORS COURSE

PRE-REQUISITE: Successful completion of a basic firearms course and proficiency with weapons.
The ability to average a 95% on three consecutive HQC Courses and an 80% on one HNQC Course.

This five-day course provides law enforcement agencies with trained firearms instructors who are certified to instruct and qualify their department personnel in the safe use and handling of firearms. A minimum average score of 95% on three consecutive HQC's and a minimum score of 80% on one HNQC are required to participate in this course. These qualifications will be conducted the first day of class. Instruction will include use of force, nomenclature and operation of firearms, care and cleaning of weapons, target evaluation and analysis, diagnosing shooter error, proficiency drills, range operation and management, firearm safety, basic shooting principles, various firearm training exercises, subdued light firing, and shotgun training. Successful completion fulfills one of the five requirements for certification as a Police Training Commission Firearms Instructor to instruct in the Academy's Basic Course for Police Officers. The others being, successful completion of a MOI Course, three years experience in firearms training and two years of college, as well as the endorsement of the Academy Director.

Required Equipment & Dress Code:
  • Proper range attire
  • Range glasses that wrap around the side
  • Hearing protection in the form of ear muffs
  • Baseball type hat is recommended.
  • 1,200 rounds Factory Loaded Ammunition, which is the same as or equivlent in size weight and velocity to the duty round used.
    (For revolver users - 2 speed loaders and for Semi-automatic users - 3 magazines)

  • Duty Holster

Weapons must be checked by the department armorer prior to the course to ensure their safe condition.

NOTE: To qualify for the course, the attendee is required to fire three consecutive scores minimally averaging 95% on the Attorney General's mandated course. (The HQC course will be fired only 3 times.) In addition, the attendee must attain an 80% for one night fire course.
